trying to fight depression A ccording to the World Health Organization, India is one of the most depressed countries in the world. While around 9% of people in the country say they have experienced extended periods of depression at least once within their lifetime, nearly 36% have suffered from Major Depressive Episodes (MDE). Yes, chronic depression might not be the ideal topic for an elevator conversation. But people think it is perfectly alright to discuss swine flu or dengue in public. One could argue it’s because they could be deadly and we can actually see people suffering from them. What we don’t realise is that depression can be deadly too and we can see people suffering if we choose to look. Going to see a doctor for depression should ideally be as normal as visiting a physician for diabetes. But our society does not consider it “normal” because there is a stigma attached to mental health issues.
